Joanne Milne has been deaf since birth, and suffers from a rare condition called Usher syndrome. Because of the disease, Milne is currently deafblind and struggles with many common tasks on a daily basis. But recently, Milne’s story reached a national audience when a video showing her cochlear implants being turned on for the first time went viral. Milne is visibly moved to tears as she hears for the first time in 40 years, and yes, it is extremely emotional and inspiring to watch.
Milne wrote a follow-up piece describing what it felt like to hear for the first time, as well as what it’s like to be an Internet sensation. She hopes that the video of her experience helps to raise awareness of Usher syndrome and support those suffering from the disease.
