The space that used to house the largest landfill in the world will soon be filled with solar panels, bringing enough energy to power 2,000 homes in New York City. Staten Island’s Freshkills Park will soon contain 47 acres of land previously used to hold trash and will instead be the new home for 30,000-35,000 solar panels.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the project, explaining: “soon it will be one of the city’s largest parks, and the site of the largest solar power installation ever developed within the five boroughs.” The newly renovated Freshkills Park will hopefully be fully operational in 2016, with construction beginning in 2015.
